ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I liked the idea of a story based on the life of those on the bottom rung of the ladder of intrigue."
Laurence Cooper has been a lawyer, an actor, a puppeteer and a PR man. An expert in reputation management, he is fascinated by tales of hubris, corruption and skulduggery. George Valentine’s Retirement Plan is his first novel.
‘The genesis of George was the Westminster expenses scandal a few years back,’ says Cooper. ‘Like most of us I was amazed and appalled by the effrontery of it all, so when I sat down to write out poured George - a lighthearted stab at that world.’

'At the same time a neighbour of mine was working for a private detective. His job was to sit in a van outside various factories and when the coast was clear pinch their dustbins and go through the contents, looking for evidence of counterfeiting. I liked the idea of a story based on the life of those on the bottom rung of the ladder of intrigue. Then one night, after a bottle of wine, a friend and I imagined how we could build and then destroy another friend’s reputation. I put all this together and started the novel.’
